Gods Own Country-Kerala

Hello world!! Gods own country , our own  down under! Kerala ! and of course my home city Cochin. Some must visit places are Fort Cochin, Mttanchery, and Fort Vypeen which are part of an Integrated Heritage Zone. Cochin City is in the Ernakulam District of Kerala, the state formed by the merger of the former kingdoms of Travancore, Cochin and Malabar (which was a part of the Madras Presidency under the British). This is the second most important port city in the western coast of India and is the commercial capital of the State.

keeping Swiss timings!

Cochin City grew around Mattanchery settlement during 1440 AD as a city with a circumference of  5 miles. Chinese and Arabs came to trade with the natives of the town. Cochin was ruled by the Cochin Rajas in the period from the 12th century . In the  16th century AD, Portuguese came to Cochin and subsequently built their Fort and thus the formation of Fort Cochin.  In the 17th and 18th century AD, the Dutch and subsequently British  invaded Cochin.  Another place to visit is Willingdon Island which was dredged and executed under the design and direction of Sir Robert Bristow. Subsequently it  emerged as the major port in the region . Later on Willingdon Island grew as the port and seat of power of the British.  Ernakulam is also worth a visit. In the 19th century during  British rule, the rulers shifted base  to Ernakulam and subsequently Market and associated settlements flourished forming the  heart of today’s City of Cochin. Most work places, Administrative and institutional centers  market places and parks  are located here. It  connects the city to the States natural heritage of backwaters. Canal & Backwater Network  systems can be commonly experienced throughout Kerala in the low-lying coastal areas.  Once upon a time, it used to be the drainage system, transportation corridor and irrigation system of traditional development. The entire development in the low-lying coastal areas has been dependent on such canal systems integrated by backwaters, lagoons and Estuary and was instrumental for trade and commercial activities. Most public spaces, settlements and institutions are situated along them.

Another place of interest is the entire Vembanad Lake Region. The Vembanad Lake Region, which extends about 70 kms to the South of the Cochin Sea mouth and 35 kms to the North, flushes out 7 major rivers through Cochin Estuary becoming a major zone of great environmental significance. Its Cochin City’s most happening place with the placement of Port and proposed container transhipment,  etc. right in the harbour.
